We're seeing a lot of fraudulent phone calls whereby people are posing as HMRC and making phone calls to businesses (including the offices of accountants!) and saying that they are about to have either a visit from HMRC in respect of erroneous/fraudulent VAT returns or the police because of fines, penalties or unpaid taxes (we are sure the police have other matters to deal with as well) and that they need to pay now or face the consequences. The person on the phone will often act very aggressively. Do not give them any details. Please take confidence that this is NOT how HMRC would act on a matter such as this. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/phishing-and-bogus-emails-hm-revenue-and-customs-examples/phishing-emails-and-bogus-contact-hm-revenue-and-customs-examples If you are worried, simply hang up the phone and contact HMRC using one of the phone numbers on the gov.uk websites or contact your own accountant. https://www.gov.uk/contact-hmrc https://www.gov.uk/government/news/fraudulent-calls-from-glds-number A simple way we beat one today was by asking them for a contact telephone number before going any further, despite the threats that followed, we kept repeating the question and in the end they hung up (after some further abuse). https://www.michaelharwood.co.uk/contact-us
